DANCE EXAMINATION


The Dance Academy is actively involved in keeping the standard of dancing in its school. The Dance Academy has collaborated with other examination bodies so as to gauge the standard of dancing continually.

There are two~three External Examination conducted annually in the academy, i.e., the Chinese Dance Examination Syllabus (CDE) and the Commonwealth Society of Teachers of Dancing (CSTD) as well as Royal Academy of Dancing (RAD).

The Dance Academy is officially recognised as the organiser for CDE Examination in Malaysia and CSTD Examination in East Malaysia.

CDE EXAMINATION


Chinese Dance Examination Syllabus (CDE) is currently the only recognized Graded Examination on Chinese Dance available from Beijing Dance Academy, aiming to improve the quality of education and to cultivate the students in an all-round way so that they can develop morally, intellectually, physically and artistically.

This dance syllabus consists of teaching materials in a comprehensive, systematic and scientific manner so that they serve a better purpose in meeting the physiological and psychological characteristics of different age groups of learners-pre-school children, school-age children, juveniles and youths, in a scientifically designed teaching and learning way, in fostering good sense of values and popularising the Chinese Dance. The syllabus is divided into 10 grades plus 3 major grades; 2 for pre-school children; 4 for school children; 2 for juveniles and 2 for youth.

The yearly CDE Examination Syllabus (CDE) is currently the only recognized Graded Examination on Chinese Dance available from Beijing Dance Academy.

CSTD EXAMINATION


The Commonwealth Society of Teachers of Dancing (CSTD) / CSTD - East Malaysia is one of the world's great dance societies proudly serving dance for over 70 years. The Society is an authoritative examining body whose high standards are internationally respected. All grades of examinations for amateur and professional dancers are conducted under separate syllabi throughout Australia and Asia.

The CSTD Examination in East Malaysia is currently divided into Classical Ballet, Modern Jazz, Tap and Contemporary. The yearly examination will be held in July.

Classical Ballet Syllabus
The Classical Ballet Syllabus is a comprehensive training system from Pre-Grades to teaching qualifications.

Ballet is a graceful and structured dance form which also provides the basic foundation for many other kinds of dance. It improves posture, develops poise and coordination and the refined quality and control of the body achieved through the discipline of ballet technique. Expressive quality of movement is achieved as well as body toning and muscle development and above all enjoyment.

The Pre-Grades Syllabus covers:
Pre-Ballet; Pre-Ballet is the Foundation of Technique and prepares students for the work in the Grades. Children also learn to mime, which develops into self-expression. It is an introduction to the examination room in the form of a performance test and to build confidence in the child.

Primary Ballet; Primary is the Development of Technique. Here children learn to listen and to recognize different rhythms in music, which will develop into musicality in their dancing. It gives them the ability to feel the movement and to dance with freedom and enjoyment

  • Dorothy Gladstone Award (Public Performance) and caters for Girls and Boys from 7 years of age upwards. Demi-Character and National Character styles are also included.This Syllabus was fully revised recently and features 118 pieces of original music especially composed for the Syllabus.

Candidates who have passed Elementary may sit for this examination.

Teaching Diploma:
Candidates who have passed the Teaching Certificate and Intermediate may sit for this examination.

Modern Jazz Syllabus
Jazz dance combines rhythm, expression and technique with aspects of a variety of popular and street music, using the body as an instrument to interpret the various styles. Forms of Jazz include the rhythmic and stylish Modern Jazz, incorporating lyrical and contemporary styles and the classical lines of Jazz Ballet. The CSTD Modern Jazz syllabus was conceived and developed by prominent Australian dance educators, Sandra Breen and Rachelle Conroy in association with many of Australia's leading choreographers. This complete training system in jazz dance, combines strength, flexibility and jazz technique with elements of lyrical, contemporary, hip-hop and commercial jazz, ensuring versatility and strong performance skills in the students. The syllabus has been highly acclaimed by teachers and students all over the world.

This Syllabus caters for candidates from 5 years of age upwards. CD's & DVD's are available to members.

Contemporary Dance Syllabus
World-famous choreographer Jason Winters has collaborated with CSTD on this new comprehensive Contemporary Technique syllabus. Its technique and structure is designed in the most classical and academic way and infused with choreographic electricity used in today's most commercial settings. With its building blocks in Graham Technique, Horton Technique, Ballet and Jazz, it combines a sense of movement, flow, energy, and breath that has been developed over years of exploration. Contemporary dance truly offers young dancers the opportunity to be physically and emotionally challenged as artists.


This Syllabus caters for students from 9 years of age upwards. Syllabi, DVD's and CD's are available to members who have attended the workshops conducted by the choreographer Jason Winters.

Tapping Syllabus
Tap is a great way to exercise, to develop rhythm, style and coordination and is an easily accessible dance form for all ages. CSTD Preliminary and Medal Tests are offered, beginning with Preliminary 1 which introduces basic barre and centre exercises, simple combinations and a tap dance. This gives students a real feeling of achievement and prepares them for the intricacies of more advanced steps and choreography.
